About Drift & Pine
Drift & Pine is a Canadian reference covering the natural materials found along Pacific and Atlantic coastal zones — primarily driftwood, but also sea glass, shore stone, kelp, and shell — and the sculptural and craft traditions built around them.
Content on this site is organized as reference articles. There are no product listings, no affiliated merchants, and no commercial endorsements. The goal is to document what is known about coastal wood and natural material art in Canada with enough specificity to be genuinely useful.
What This Site Covers
The focus is on three areas:
- Ecology and formation — how coastal drift systems work, what species of wood enter them, and how environmental conditions shape the material over time.
- Working properties — the practical characteristics of driftwood and associated coastal materials, including moisture content, structural behavior, and surface finish.
- Sculptural and craft methods — documented techniques for assembling, mounting, stabilizing, and finishing nature-based forms, drawing on practices observed along the BC coast, Vancouver Island, Nova Scotia, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Geographic Scope
The primary geographic focus is Canada: British Columbia's Pacific coast, including the Queen Charlotte Strait, Haida Gwaii, and the Sunshine Coast; and the Atlantic provinces, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and the Newfoundland coast. Some reference material draws on comparable coastal environments elsewhere where the ecological parallels are direct.
Editorial Standards
Factual claims are sourced where possible to government data (Natural Resources Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada), academic publications, and the observations of identified practitioners. Where information is approximate — as it often is with informal craft traditions — this is noted explicitly. External links go to authoritative sources only.
